The Miserable Ones (“Les Misérables” in French) is a Broadway musical based on the more than 1400 pages book of the same name by Victor Hugo. Victor Hugo wrote the book which is considered to be one of the greatest books of the 1800s. A composer from Vannes (France), Claude-Michel Schönberg, adapted Hugo’s tale into a French musical in 1980. It was translated by Herbert Kretzmer into English in 1985 and opened at London’s Barbican Centre in 1985.

Put simply, Les Misérables (The Miserable Ones) is a tale of redemption. The story begins with a prisoner 24601 French man named Jean Valjean, who was sentenced to 19 years of prison for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving children and her sister. In the musical’s signature scene, a bishop gives the paroled Jean Valjean shelter and food. When Valjean repays the bishop’s kindness by stealing his prized silverware and is caught by the authorities, the bishop claims that he gave Valjean the silver.

Displaying the beautiful thing that is redemption, the bishop sings, “And remember this, my brother, You must use this precious silver, See in this some high plan, To become an honest man.” The rest of play follows Jean Valjean’s life and Javert’s attempt to follow the letter of the law. For more than 25 years, viewers have wrestled with the play’s principal question: Can justice and mercy coexist?

Les Misérables is one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time. With over ten thousand performances, it is the third longest-running show in Broadway history. In 1987, the play won eight Tony Awards, including Best Score and Best Musical.

Fathers and Mothers all across the world have witnessed Jean Valjean’s magnificent love for Cosette. In terms of both emotional success and monetary, Les Misérables is nothing short of a triumph.
